Hi, this is my first post since December 2012. I still use Inkscape but I now run my own laser cutting business. Unfortunately, I no longer have any spare time to continue adding tutorials and links to handy sites.

I will leave all existing posts in place but keep in mind Inkscape has been updated a few times and many of my tutorials will now be out of date. To keep up with the latest information I suggest you visit the Inkscape Cutting Design forum. The forum is run by Brynn who is very knowledgeable with Inkscape. You can ask questions and be helped by some very talented people. I encourage anyone learning Inkscape to visit the forum.

I kept hoping I would have time to revive this blog but sadly it is time to say goodbye. I thank everyone who left encouraging comments and to the new friends from the Inkscape community who were always there to help out. I no longer monitor this website and do visit the Inkscape Cutting Design forum on a regular basis.

Goodbye and All the Best
Carolyn

A few of the designs are repeats of the same pattern in different sizes. I designed the smaller patterns to cut with silver and gold vinyl to use as accent pieces. If you plan to cut the small patterns out of cardstock you may have to resize the design.
I have only shown a few examples and there are so many other possibilities. You can create stained glass type designs, windows and gems. Experiment and see what you can create.

I haven’t shown examples but experiment with flipping one of the shapes vertical or horizontal. The two shapes look the same until you apply extrude. Or, try more than two shapes or place them side by side.

The steps will be the same regardless of the location of the shapes used. Open Inkscape and give it a try.

Below is a pictorial showing the steps I use.
As you may have noticed if you have downloaded free single line or engraving fonts that they are not true single lines. True type fonts (tff) have closed paths and many letters of the alphabet require an open path to be a true single line.

I have noticed there are two types of fonts for single lines, one type actually has two lines on top of each other and they are fine if you plan to use a pen or engraving tool in your cutter. Unfortunately, rhinestone designs require a lot of manual input if you want to use this type of font. The other type of single line font is truly single but it has an extra line to close the path. They are my preferred font for rhinestone designs as the extra line can be deleted.

In the video I show how I change both styles of font to a single line to use in my projects. Inkscape is a versatile program with many options and I am sure my way is not the only way. Another file to share. I created this design in Inkscape by using radial tiled clones and the path effect - knot. If you would like to make similar designs I do have a post with a written tutorial and video here.

I have successfully cut this design at 4" but feel free to resize to suit your own project. If you decide to cut the design at 4" I recommend you use a good sticky mat to prevent the cardstock lifting when cutting the thin stencil cuts.
A few nights ago I was playing with the spiral feature in Inkscape and ended up with a design that reminded my of a spider web. I decided I would start with a new spiral and see how it could be achieved. If you want to design a simple web for a project you will find this method is fast and easy to create.
After working out how to change a spiral to a web I continued testing other methods to see if I could make a web where I had more control over the design. I will be posting my results as a separate post. Meanwhile I will show you how I changed a spiral to a web.
Please note, the following fonts are not true single line fonts. They do have double lines but both lines are on the same path. If you are engraving or using a pen in you cutter it just means the pen or engraving tool will go over the same line twice.

The fonts are not suitable for rhinestone projects as both lines will be recognised by the software and you will end up with two of each circle.
It is possible to remove the double line and save as a document. I patiently removed the double lines and saved each font as an SVG file. It means I have to select each letter and align them instead of using the font in the normal manner.
These ones need a bit of manual manipulation but it is fast and easy and I think it is worth it as their are a few unusual fonts.
Below is a screenshot of the fonts you can download. On the left is how they look when typed with stroke on and fill off. On the right is how they look after being manually changed. It doesn't take long to change the font.
A few days ago I found an extension for Inkscape that makes the removal of the extra line easier and I have uploaded a video showing how to install and use the extension. The video also shows how to remove the extra line manually. Video can be found here. If you prefer the manual method the steps are listed below.
Instructions listing how I changed the letters that were a closed shape.
Changing a letter is fast and easy, except the Handscript font which is a bit shaky and may need some nodes smoothing.
1- Select the typed text, apply Path>Object to Path.
2- Ungroup.
3- Hold down the shift key and select the node at the end of each segment you wish to remove. Only select two nodes at any one time.

4- When the two nodes are selected apply delete segment between two non-endpoint nodes as shown below.
If you are the same, you may run into problems when using single line fonts. Work with Stroke On and Fill Off. Another alternative is to work in Outline mode to clearly see the path of the font.

I know many of us like to change the spacing between each letter when we are working with fonts. A few things are slightly different when working with single line fonts.
You can still kern text in the normal manner.
You can still apply Object to Path and Ungroup to change the spacing between letters.
You cannot apply Path>Union, instead use Path>Combine.
You cannot apply Stroke to Path or you will end up with double lines. See example below.
To have the small circles follow the perimeter of the larger circle the centres must be in the same location. <span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">

Aussie Carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14177227670940394488noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-690281974977959503.post-43960213842043230252010-08-06T00:24:00.000+10:002011-10-04T16:18:48.076+10:00Nested Shapes Using Tiled Clones. Two videos showing how you can use tiled clones in Inkscape to create your own nested shapes. Tiled clones are great for nested shapes as the new shapes are not distorted.

The first video is great if you like to design using stroke. If you prefer your nested shapes in full colour you may find the second video is more suitable.
You may find this happens when using path effects such as interpolate sub-paths and pattern along path. It is easy to change in the Fill and Stroke settings.

Open Fill and Stroke
Select the Fill tab
At the top right corner there are two options.
- The image with an open section will result in gaps where objects overlap.
- The shape that is solid will give a solid looking result when you apply path>combine.
Free butterfly rhinestone design.
NO LONGER AVAILABLE
Here is a picture of a card I created using the butterfly design. It is based on the same butterfly I used for a few of my past free files. This card was very difficult to photograph due to the sparkle in the glitter.

At the time of cutting this stencil I did not have any rhinestones but I was impatient to see how it looked, so I used glitter. I placed the mylar stencil on a pre-cut piece of double sided sticker paper and sprinkled magenta glitter over the stencil. I then removed the stencil and sprinkled white glitter over the the rest of the sticker paper.
Very intricate celtic knot designs can be created by using the simple steps as listed.
Here are a few files I have created using the Knot feature. I will be sharing some of these files after test cutting, so check back later if you are interested in any of them.
Set of two scroll butterflies. Set includes a 3 inch scroll butterfly and a card topper designed from the negative. The card topper includes a separate body for the butterfly.
The card in the photo is white cardstock for the topper, silver embossing powder on the body and a black card base. I added a clear rhinestones to the antennae. I have not finished the card yet and will stamp the sentiment at a later date.
